Shanghai Expo mascot Haibao on display at Hong Kong park

(2009-06-08 12:16:12)

Haibao, the mascot of the Shanghai World Exposition, has moved to the famed Victoria Park on his extended visit to Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government said on Sunday.

Haibao, which arrived in Hong Kong late last year and had been on display at the Kowloon Park, moved the Victoria Park on June 1 and will remain there for six months until Nov. 30, the HKSAR government said in a news bulletin.

It is expected to move on to the Sha Tin Park and the Hong Kong Park later.

Haibao's change of scenery coincides with the Haibao Tour of the World, an online photo and image competition organized by the Shanghai's Bureau of World Expo Co-ordination. The competition runs from May 27 until July 26.

The HKSAR government urged members of the public to take snaps with Haibao or create their own artwork and submit them online at http://big5.expo2010.cn.

The Shanghai Expo will be held in Shanghai from May 1 to Oct. 31, 2010. As at May 14, about 238 countries, cities and international organizations had confirmed their participation in the Expo, which is expected to attract 70 million visitors.

Hong Kong will build a stand-alone Pavilion at the Expo under the theme Hong Kong -- A City with Unlimited Potential. It will also participate in the Urban Best Practices Area exhibition, which highlights best practices in sustainable city life.

Organizers have been promoting the Shanghai Expo with the help of local authorities throughout China and around the world. Haibao, an image created from an animated edition of the Chinese character for "people", has been traveling around, too.
