Shudu Lake
Located at the northeast of the city of Shangri-la with a very convenient transportation. Shudu Lake is 43km from the city and it is more then 10 kilometers away from the Bitahai Lake.. Now it is constructed into a high- land pasture resort.
"Shu" means cheese in Tibetan and "Du" has the meaning of stone. It has a legend that in ancient times, an eminent monk roamed from place to place, one day, he arrived here. The herdsmen supported and served him with cheese. The eminent monk was glad to see that the cheese of the pastureland of Shudukang is as strong as stone, so he prayed " Wish the cheese here is as strong as stone forever". From then on the name of Shudukang came into being.
The lake is 3705 meters above the sea level with is square kilometers of water area, it is one of the biggest lakes in Diqing Prefecture. The lake water is so limpid that people could see the cracked-stomach fish produced in the lake whose color is golden and there is a crack line along its stomach.
As the source of the Shuoduogang River, the lake is 3705m above sea level and covers an area of 15 square kilometers. The lake abounds in unique species of fish, with double lips and a golden color. Bordering the lake is one of the best grazing fields in Zhongdian. Around the lake, there are dense forest of fir spruce and birch. There lives different wild animals such as musk deer, bear, leopard, golden cat, deer, pheasant etc.
Shudu Lake is a famous pasture in Diqing Every Spring and summer, herds of yak and goat grazing beside the lake the shepherd’s shelters dots on the grassland, frequently. To the east of the lake are white birch woods which in spring and summer are jade green while in late autumn the leaves turn gold. In the untouched woods, wildlife such as bear, musk dear, lynx and leopard all live. People can hear the sound of flute comes from afar. Staying beside the lake, you can deeply feel the quiet and leisurely life of high-land people.
The best time for visiting is from September to November, the short period during which it is possible to avoid the unremitting rain of summer and the frost of winter. You can easily spend half a day enjoying the lake's nature and photographing scenery.
