Sangke Grassland
The Sangke Grassland, lying at an average altitude of over 3,000m above sea level, is situated a short 14km from Xiahe. It is a fertile alpine grassland surrounded by mountains on four sides. Sangke Grassland is famous for its verdant grass and beautiful scenery with blue sky, fluffy clouds, vast lush grassland dotted with herds of sleep and cattle.
This vast expanse of grassy plains, covering an area of around 70 square kilometers, is a lonely, beautiful place that is a nice change for those from bustling Chengdu or Lanzhou. There are only 4,000 Tibetan nomads on the grasslands, who graze yak herds and offer tourists the chance of a ride upon their horses.
The prairie is named for the summer-blooming sangke flowers that form a natural carpet extending to the far horizons. It is famous for holding
royal Buddhist ceremony in history and is considered to be small Tibet. In recent years, Sangke Grassland has attracts lots of tourists from all over the world for its Tibetan amorous feelings.
Entertainment here varies according to your preference. Botanists and hikers will be happy to just set off into the rolling hills, but for those after a little more exciting the horse rides are good fun. Food here consists of a very Tibetan affair with courses and beverages such as yak butter tea, chang, Tibetan buns and the famous "Hand Held Mutton". Nighttime is for Tibetan and Western singing and dancing with the locals, until the bonfire crackles low and your Tibetan yurt be cons.
Sangke Grassland show its stunning beauty in summer. Grass turn green, variety of flowers are in full boom, vying with each other in beauty. The weather condition is very comfortable with clear sky and clean air.
If you are enamored of the prairie’s tranquil environment and it natural beauty, and reluctant to leave, you can stay at the yurt hotels. Horse-rental service is available at the site and visitor can pay a small fee to buy hours’ of galloping around the vast land like the locals.
Sangke Grassland is a secluded hideout, another world away from the hustling and bustling city. It’s a place for people to get close to the nature. People in the grassland still live a traditional lifestyle and until recently and the grassland begun opening up to tourism.
