Big Banyan Tree
At the village of Gaotian to the south of the town of Yangshuo, where the most typical pastoral scenery is to be found, there is a big banyan tree over 1000 years old. The tree is said to be an ancient Banyan planted over 1500 years ago in China's Jin Dynasty. With a limpid stream flowing
at the foot of it, the Great Banyan, with its reflection on the calm water, is very beautiful.
The banyan tree is now 17 meters high, 7.1 meters around the trunk, and covers an area of 1000 square meters. The braches of the three spread out in all directions and its roots twisting crisscrossed. The tree trunk takes six men to circle with their arms stretched out.
When we look closely we see that it has beautifully twisted roots and gnarled branches. Its crown
is round with an exuberant growth of branches and leaves. There is a huge branch stretching out straight starting just 1 meter above the ground. Enduring wind and rain for thousands of years, it is surprising that this branch has not been harmed.
There is an ancient ferry crossing under the tree, called "Rongyin Gudu". Across the river, there are rocks of varying sizes, fascinating mountains and wonderful caves, setting each other off and forming a pleasing contrast. Surrounded by fascinating peaks, green bamboo, footpaths crisscrossing fabric-like between the fields, along with the local conditions and customs of a mountain village in the South, it is a virtual paradise for exploring.
The surrounding countryside along the Jinbao River also offers a spectacular view. The Big Banyan had become famous after a scene of the movie Liu Sanjie was shot there. During the scene folk song singe Liu Sanjie expresses affection to her lover by throwing an embroidered ball to him. That's why lovers and tourists, filled with admiration, will take pictures of each other in front of this old tree.
The area around features tranquil countryside scenery with rivers, village on hill foot, various pinnacles.
