Qingping Market
Qingping Market came into existence in 1979. It has over 2000 stall along 1-km-long Qingping Road and Ti Yun Road in the north of Shamian Island. It is the largest one among several hundred free markets on Qingping Road and it is also the most famous free market.
The Qingping Market is the general name of more than 2,000 stalls on this crossed street with 1,200 meters long, covering an area of over 6,000 square meters. From 4 in the morning till 6 in the evening, the visitors are jostle each other in a crowd and endless.
This is an unique place, effectively you need to be open minded to visit the market where you will see from tiger paws to live scorpions and every kind of dry food you can imagine from sea horses to shark fins to a million other things have no idea what they are.
The Chinese medicine section is interesting and less disturbing, perhaps as the by-products of endangered species are not so instantly recognizable.
Across the short bridge from the north shore of Shamian is the bustling, noisy complex of alleys packed with shops and market stalls. The central alley contains herbalists, spice sellers, and fruit and vegetable stalls. To the left is the infamous meat market, with dogs, cats, and various endangered species on sale.
A collection of jade shops along with stores selling reproduction antiques, old watches and jewelry, Mao memorabilia, and other collectibles are also found here. Farther north, on Daihe Lu, is the private antiques market, where you'll find plenty of old furniture, porcelain, jade, and banknotes.
Every day people come here to buy as many as several thousand, including people of Guangzhou or nearby cities and towns, there are still many visitors from Hongkong and Taiwang, even foreigners like to come here to view.
