Bi Feng Xia Panda Base
Bi Feng Xia (Bi Feng Gorge) is a large ecological park in the mountains about a two and a half hour drive from Chengdu. It is the first scenic spot integrating natural scenic spot and eco-zoo in China, including leisure, vacation, sightseeing, and entertainment. Ecological wild animal zoo was built in 1999 in Bi Feng Gorges.
Bi Feng Xia consists of two main attractions: the Panda Research Center and a safari park type zoo, where you get on a bus to drive through areas with Lion, Zebra and all the other stuff you find at these type of places.
Bi Feng Xia Panda Base is located in Bi Feng Xia Town, Ya’an City of south-west Sichuan Province. It’s a
giant panda’s paradise with well captive raising, reproduction, rare wild animal rescuing and education facilities. Bi Feng Xia base was opened in 2003 as the part of the world's largest Giant Panda Migration. It was the biggest artificial migration of captive-bred giant panda ever seen.
There are dedicated grazing grounds, "kindergartens" for young pandas and even a panda hospital and research institute. Several different varieties of bamboo have been planted in the base either by the water or on the slopes. The new home for giant pandas appears like a park with
a natural environment.
After about a 3km walk on the path, you could see the entrance to the panda research center, from there you can than catch a free bus that will shuttle you a couple of further kilometers to this gate. Walking through the gate and along the meandering mountain slope for a while, visitors can see several European-style cabins made of bricks and tiles. These are the pandas' homes.
After the Sichuan earthquake on May 12th, 2008, the Wolong Giant Panda Reserve Center, a very popular travel destination was badly damaged. Because of this disaster the majority of the Pandas at Wolong needed to be re-homed at the place around Shen Shu Ping, about 80km far from the original Wolong Base. So most of the giant panda were transported to the Bi Feng Xia Panda Base in 2-3 years.
