Situated between the China People's Revolution Military Museum and China Central Television Station, China Century Monument was built to welcome the 21st century's coming.
Facing south, it encompasses an area of about 4.5 hectares (11 acres). The surface with 960 pieces of granite, symbolizes the 9,600,000 square kilometers of Chinese soil.
The main building of the China Century Monument is composed of the revolving gradient altar platform and the static cloisters. It is modeled after the shape of a sun dial, the upper part is called “Qian”, which is ever- rotating, the lower part is called “Kun”. To traditional Chinese culture, the “Qian” symbolizes the constantly striving spirit of the Chinese nationality, and the “Kun” symbolizes the tolerating and peaceful nature of the Chinese nationality, tolerant and peaceful.
This structure consists the World Art Museum, the Holy Fire Square and the Bronze Thoroughfare.
The World Art Museum is located in the main building of the China Century Monument. The museum is comprised of the Permanent Exhibition Hall, the Special Exhibition Hall and the Digital Art Gallery. There one can have a clear understanding of the history of world art by appreciating precious artworks from other countries.
Holy Fire Square lies near the south entrance of the China Century Monument. At the center of the square is the Holy Fire Platform. The Holy Fire originated from the site of the Peking Man, stays lit during all kinds of weather. It symbolizes that the Chinese civilization, which originated with fire, is everlasting. To the east and west of the square, two springs flow down the stairs, which represent the Yangtze River and the Yellow River.
Stretching from the Holy Fire Square, the Bronze Thoroughfare is a 270-meter (886 feet) long road built of bronze. The thoroughfare is just like a straight timeline that inscribed with about 180,000 words recording the important historical events of China and a chronology of Human history. Strolling along the bronze corridor feels like a trip across time and space.
The China Century Monument is more of a monument, that inscribes the rises and falls of the 5,000 years of Chinese history and showcases the glory of the Chinese nationality.
