Pingyao Shanxi Province
Located in central Shanxi Province, Pingyao is noted for its old city walls and streets. UNESCO inscribed the city on the World Culture Heritage list in 1997. Pingyao ancient city is the outstanding example of Chinese Han nationality cities during Ming and Qing Dynasties, remaining all features of such periods, Pingyao ancient city reveals a picture of unexpected cultural, social, economic and religious development in Chinese history.
Inside the city, the streets, residential quarters with court – yards, government offices, and shops all preserve their ancient Ming and Qing styles.
As its long history, Pingyao have a number of historical and cultural relics. The existing city walls, 10.6 meters high and 6.42 kilometers long, were built in the Ming Dynasty.
There are towers on the six gates, 3,000 crenels and 72 castles on the walls surrounded by moats, all typical of ancient Chinese architecture. Besides, the Qingxu Taoist Temple, Lei Futai, Qiaojia courtyard, the Shuanglin Temple are all definitely worth to visit.
There are lots of special performances in Pingyao, including The Magistrate Conducting a Trial, The Magistrate Praying for Rain, The Magistrate Welcoming Guests, etc. Besides, Pingyao also have many folk performance, such as Land Boat Dance, Stilt Walking, Escort Service and so on. You will impressed deeply by these performance.
