Shannan


Shannan is located at the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River south of the Kangdese Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.

It is bounded by the capital city Lhasa to the north, Xigatse to the west, Nyingchi to the east and India and Bhutan to the south.

With an area of 73,500 square kilometers, Shannan occupies one-fifteenth of the total area of the Tibet Autonomous Region. With a boundary line of more than 600 kilometers, it has great strategic importance and serves as China’s southwestern border area.

Shannnan enjoys high political and cultural status in the history of Tibet. It is also known as the source of the Tibetan civilization and has become the ruling center twice in Tibetan history.

ShannanThe natural scenery in Shannan is simply breathtaking. Various landscapes of snow mountains, holy lakes, rapid rivers, deep valleys, majestic waterfalls, peculiar caves, cozy hot springs, expansive grasslands and vast virgin forests come perfectly together into a wondrous world.

Minority groups are another attractive sight in the region. The magical and exotic Tibetans dominate over 90% of the whole residents. During the local festivals, you can enjoy colorful activities of ethnic sport matches, singing and dancing performances, Tibetan Operas and so on.

The famous local Tibetan foods here are Yak butter Tea, chang, T sam ba and air-dry beefs. Sichuan Cuisine is also common to see in this region.
