The “old” is the characteristic of the tourist sights in Shanxi Province. The Nanchan Temple, the Halo Temple, and the Yingxian Wooden Pagoda are the oldest wooden architecture in China. There are the Jin Memorial Temple in the Song Dynasty, the Yongle Palace in the Yuan Dynasty, many old cities and residence. There are 5 state – listed famous cultural and historic cities including Datong, Pingyao, Xinjiang, Daixian and Qixian. So the province is known as the “Old Architecture Museum”. They can divided into 4 tourist zones and 1 route. Taiyuan Tourist Zone includes Jin Memorial Temple, Pingyao, Jinyang Lake and so on. Datong Tourist Zone includes the Buddhist Pilgrimage, the architecture and sculptures of the Tang Dynasty. Huanghe On – Water Tourist Zone includes Hukou Waterfall to Dayu Ferry. Linfen – Yuncheng Tourist Zone includes the Huge Chinese Scholartree at Hongtong, the Jail of Ming Dynasty, and Guandi Temple. One route includes the Southwest Shanxi Province, Taiyuan and Wutai Mountains. Besides there are noted state – level landscape zones including Mt. Hengshan, Mt. Beiwudang, and Wulao Peak, Along the Great Wall, there are Yanmen Pass, Pingxing Pass and Niangzi Pass.

Capital: Taiyuan

Located in the central part of Shanxi Province, Taiyuan is an old city. It was formerly called Jinyang, originally built at the end of the Spring and Autumn Period with a history of over 2400 years. On account of its long history, there are cultural relics and places of interest all over the Yaiyuan area.
