Area: 153,000 sq km

Shandong is the former site of the State of Qi and the State of Lu, the birthplace of Confucius and Mencius, and the Confucian culture. Qufu’s Confucius Temple, Mansion of Confucius, and Forest of Confucius have been listed in the World Cultural Heritage List. Mt. Tai, the first one of China’s five famous mountains, has been listed in the world natural and cultural heritage list. The province has 6 state – listed famous cultural and historic cities, and it is rich in historic sites and relics. There are “two tourist zones and one tourist route”. Qufu(Confucian Temple, Confucian Mansion, and Confucian Forest), Tai’an, Ji’nan – the “Spring city”, Zoucheng(Temple of Mencius, Mansion of Mencius, and Forest of Mencius), and Liaocheng form a “Mountain – River and Sages Tourist Zone”. Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai, Penglai(mirage), Changshan, Heishan, and Liugong Islands form                        a “Seashore Tourist Zone”. “One route ” is Weifang – Zibo “Ethnic Custom Tourist Route” including Weifang’s kites and Yangjiabu’s woolcut year picture. Bisides the Heze Peony, Zaozhuang’s Pomegranate Garden Plot, and Liangshan are well known at home and abroad. The tourist festivals include the Weifang International Kite Festival, the International Confucian Culture Festival, the International Mt. Tai – Climbing Meeting, the Zibo Colorful Lantern Fair, Zoucheng Model Mencian Mother Teaching Her Son Meeting, and etc. Besides there are the Seeking Historic Site Tour, the Study Tour, the Ethnic Custom Tours, and the Seashore Vacation Tour.

Capital: Jinan

Capital of Shandong, Jinan was known as Lixia during the Warring States Period(475 – 221B.C.) and has been the prefectural seat since the Jin Dynasty(265 – 430). The city is renowned for the scenic Daming Lake and for four group of springs – the Baotu, Black Tiger, Pearl, and Five Dragons. Places of historical interest include the Longshan Culture remains, the Dragon and Tiger Pagoda of the Tang Dynasty(618 – 907) and the 1000 – Buddha Mountain.
