Folk Printing and Dyeing

The history in which the Chinese people use dyestuffs can be traced back to the Old Stone Age some 50,000 to 100,000 years ago. In ancient times, folk printing and dyeing were primarily for practical use, then for life beautification. For thousands of years, the people have not only dyed cloth with natural dyestuffs but also grasped the skill to draw by hand patterns on fabrics. In addition to pattern drawing by hand, press printing with the designs engraved on woodblocks appeared in the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. – A. D. 220). A more advanced method became popular after the Tang Dynasty (618-907). With the development and dissemination of the printing and dyeing technology, dyehouses of every description were set up in various parts of China. Up till now, there exist quite a few old dyeworks which still operate in the traditional way, one of which is the Laoyangjia (the Old Yang’s Family) Dyehouse in Anhui Province.
